On Thursday afternoon, we began Unit 2 with a BANG (or rather more like a FIZZ)! To begin looking at our central idea, "Matter can be transformed," students were invited to watch a science experiment. To begin, students were asked if they thought we could combine Diet Coke and Mentos. Students were then asked to think of a hypothesis (prediction) of what they thought would happen when the two materials were combined. We came up with different amounts of Mentos which we could add to the Diet Coke to see if there were different results. After that, we recorded our materials and then watched to see what would happen next...
After the experiment, we wrote up the steps (procedure) for what we did and we talked about WHY we thought that had happened. We also discussed ways in which we could test again and what we thought would happen next time.
