Art is in the eye of the beholder...
We are off and running in 3.2 with Unit 4! Last week, we had our trip to K21 as a provocation for our unit. Students were taken on a tour around the museum to discuss many different aspects of art, including "What is art?" and "What inspires people to create art?" Students looked at different pieces in an effort to develop their own understanding of art and how it is created. In addition to investigating different artwork, students were also given the opportunity to create their own sculptures based on either a funny story or a scary story! It was interesting to see students developing their own artwork and sharing their creations with one another.
This week, we have continued looking at our unit by developing a definition of "What is art?" In order to do this, students began a list of "criteria" of what something needs to have in order to be considered "art." Students have also been asked to bring in anything from home which they consider to be art so that we can see if it meets our criteria. If the actual artwork cannot be brought in students are asked to either bring in or email a photo of it!
In addition to our discussions, we are beginning our artist workshops this week. As part of our investigation, we will be inviting artists to come in and share their art with the Grade 3 students as well as provide them with the opportunity to try it themselves. We will begin today with Mrs. Godsmark, who will be sharing her illustrations with students and allow them to attempt to illustrate a story of their choosing. We will be having artist visits on a weekly basis, culminating with a visit from Mr. Fred Skofield, AKA "Fred the Haiku man" near the end of the unit.
